Objective£ºThis study was done to analyze cause and characteristics of suicide deaths by semi psychological autopsy. Methods: We analyzed 31 suicide deaths among 161 suicide cases which were recruited to Seoul Suicide Prevention Center from Jan. 28, 2009 to Dec. 4, 2012. Three cases from community mental health centers were added to the final analysis. The questionnaire was filled up by counselor after finishing interview. The questionnaire was composed of general characteristics (18 items), medical characteristics (5 items), supporting system (5 items), suicide related questions (18 items). Results: The relationship between interviewees and suicide victims was spouses (N=14), parents (N=7), sons and daughters (N=7). 16 of 34 suicide victims was in the medical condition at the time of suicide death and among them 15 cases had mental illness and 14 of them was in the serious condition. 17 victims had been diagnosed by mental illness. The most common mental illness was depression (11 cases) followed by schizophrenia (5 cases) and substance addiction (1 case). 8 of suicide victims had a prior history of suicide attempt. The most common socio-environmental cause of suicide was economic problems and the most common suicide method was hanging (20 cases). Conclusion: Suicide deaths were very closely related to the presence and severity of mental illness, economic status and interpersonal problems.
